The first day of trekking resembles a walking safari, offering opportunities to spot giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalos, and possibly elephants along the trail. Due to the high likelihood of encountering wildlife, an armed park ranger will accompany the group, as required by Arusha National Park regulations.
As the trek progresses, you will cross the Ngarenanyuki River and pass a scenic waterfall at the base of Mount Meru. Upon reaching Miriakamba Hut (2,500m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner, and warm water will be provided for freshening up.
Altitude Considerations & Acclimatization Tips
Since this is your first day at a higher altitude, it is essential to follow these acclimatization guidelines:
✔ Stay hydrated – Drink at least 4 liters of water per day, taking small sips frequently.
✔ Prevent altitude sickness – Consider taking high-altitude medication as a preventive measure (consult your doctor before the trip).
✔ Listen to your body – Some trekkers may experience headaches or mild discomfort due to reduced oxygen levels at night. Inform your guide immediately if symptoms worsen.
Armed Ranger Policy in Arusha National Park
By park regulations, all Mount Meru climbers must be accompanied by an armed ranger. During peak trekking periods, the park may assign a single ranger to multiple groups, adjusting the pace to accommodate all climbers. While Gemuka Adventures will make every effort to secure a private ranger, this cannot be guaranteed due to park policies.
