This is a camp that promises a special and truly memorable African wilderness safari, for both the first-timer and the seasoned safari. With only eight spacious tents, it’s small and personal and due to the local surroundings, not particularly suited to small children. The camp is closed for a few months during the rains.

Nakara Hotel is located on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, around one hundred kilometres from Kilimanjaro Airport. With the Marangu Gate only 2kms from the hotel, it’s perfectly suited to climbers. Perched on the rim of the crater, the lodge itself is one of Tanzania’s wonders! The design is wonderfully opulent with great attention to detail, imaginative antiques, African art and English country house furnishings… in perfect harmony! There are thirty rooms in three separate camps here, all slightly different, though each oozes romantic, intimately and secrecy. It’s certainly one of the most luxurious lodges in Tanzania, so not suited to everyone.

Located on the eastern rim of the crater, the lodge is the only tourist accommodation here. It therefore offers guests unique and spectacular views down into the crater floor and of the sunsets over the western horizon. Another major advantage of this location, is that guests can be in the crater within five minutes of leaving the lodge. The 92 rooms are all very spacious, comfortable and set below the main lodge, so views of the forest and crater are great. It’s a well managed lodge with friendly staff and excellent cuisine.

The lodge is located in a spectacular position: literally perched on the rim of the crater and built mainly from natural stone and local timber. The 75 rooms are all simple yet comfortable, though the views from the rooms make up for any modernisation that they lack. The staff are friendly and the outside veranda must offer one of the best sundowner spots in Tanzania.

It is considered to be Tanzania’s loveliest National Park. Some say ‘Tanzania’s answer to the Amazon’. The park lies 120km south of Kigoma and consists mainly miombo woodlands with narrow strips of riverine forests. Kigoma Hilltop Hotel has put up a small tented camp on the edge of the lake and offers a very flexible full board package. This includes pick-up/drop off from Kigoma Airport/Hilltop Hotel, return boat transfers to the park and all meals. Sight seeing and local activities are also included. Drinks are extra. The camp is simple and comfortable given the terrain, though not luxurious.

Ol Tukai lies at the heart of Amboseli, set at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The eighty cottage style rooms spreads out on either side of the main lodge, around well manicured lawns and a canopy of acacia trees. The architecture is unobtrusive with lots of wood, slate and local stone. The lodge is well run, very comfortable and has one of the best settings in the park.

The meals are a high light here, however game viewing is naturally the ultimate attraction. Located on a working coffee plantation at the foot of Mount Meru, just eight miles outside Arusha town, it’s approximately 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro Airport. Accommodation is in forty two comfortably furnished and individually styled rondavel huts overlooking Lake Duluti. The whole area is a haven for bird life and the lodge can organise walks around the lake and the coffee plantations. There is a pool, a large central restaurant serving good food and the bars an ideal place to discuss the safari or climbing experiences. Probably the best place in this area and newly refurbished.

Ideally located in the heart of the Serengeti plains on the edge of the Seronera River, this is the perfect starting point for exploring the area. The lodge is built on a kopje with excellent views. There are seventy five very simple yet comfortable rooms. Don’t come here if you’re looking for excellent service and luxurious rooms, though the staff are very friendly and rooms clean. Use the lodge for its great location – especially during the months of the migration. There is also a spacious restaurant and very pleasant bar, that overlooks the plains.

Located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Victoria, the lodge is around 15kms from the Serengeti, and 125kms north of Mwanza. Embraced by savannah, the lodge looks like a small village, stretched out along the shores of the lake. The main buildings and eight bungalows are well built, painted white and thatched in the traditional style. Food, service and atmosphere are all excellent. Excursions in boats and on mountain bikes are offered, so you can truly experience Africa. You can also fish from the beach for Tilapia, go out in a boat to catch Nile perch, or wander around on the Lodge’s 100 hectares of savannah looking for birds.
